Travel to Great Mirror: Photo 1 Sunrise at the Colosseum. The Flavian Amphitheater takes its popular name from a long-vanished statue of Nero as the sun god. This colossal statue rose a hundred feet--about two-thirds the height of the Colosseum--at about the spot where the cypress grows today. It was made of concrete, covered in bronze. Ironically, it disappeared even before the name Colosseum made its appearance in the eighth century. By then, four centuries had passed since the emperor Honorius had put an end to gladiatorial contests.
