On the south side of the hall there is another figure of Albert, this time atop a memorial to the Exhibition. Designed by Joseph Durham, the monument was unveiled in 1863 at a different location and moved here in 1893. Here Albert wears black paint, perhaps because he was decent enough to have been embarrassed by the thing and sensibly preferred to spend the 6,000 pounds on a museum of science and art. Once he was dead, his objections were forgotten.
