Mileposts on the road were numbered starting at Bandung. Rapid growth of the city, however, began only after the railroad from Batavia (now Jakarta) arrived in 1884. By 1920 Bandung had 90,000 residents, including 10,000 Europeans. Ten years later it had 157,000, including 18,000 Europeans.
