The shophouse originated in Singapore during the 1840s. The standard form included a five-foot covered walkway or kaki lima, with living quarters extending overhead to the property line. (See H.S.H. Lim, "The Shophouse Rafflesia: An Outline of its Malaysian Pedigree and its Subsequent Diffusion in Asia," in Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1993; cited in Gullick, p. 47.) The view here is along Jalan Tun HS Lee, the former High Street.
