Travel to Peninsular India: Bijapur: Photo 1

world pictures Peninsular India: Bijapur

The Bagalkot Road (which continues past Bagalkot to Dharwar and Hubli) passes through the city's wall at the Mangoli Gate. That was the gate's original name, coming from the nearby town of Mangoli, but Aurangzeb reputedly entered the city here. Victors do have their previleges, and since his time the gate has been known as the Fateh or Victory Gate. It might equally well have been called the Gate of Defear.
