![]() Fixed along the Kingsway (now Rajpath), the processional avenue to the Viceroy's Palace in Delhi is this copy of the Allahabad Proclamation, which marked the end of the East India Company's rule. Queen Victoria instructed the author to adopt a magnanimous tone despite the bitter memory of the just-quelled Mutiny. The text formerly appeared on a monument at Allahabad, too, but it has been removed from its column there, which now stands blank and cryptic.
