Near the mihrab, or prayer niche, the stonework becomes much more elaborate to define or indicate the maqsura, the enclosure reserved for the sovereign. Islam makes much of the egalitarianism uniting the umma, or community of believers, but the opulence of this part of the mosque belies that ideal. The view here looks toward the brightly lit cathedral; the mihrab is behind the camera.
