We've moved on to the next cave. (There's a numbering problem here. The cave in this picture is called Cave 3 by most guides but Cave 4 by Banerji, who counts a natural cave between this and the previously shown Cave II.) This cave in any case is famous in the historiography of ancient India because an inscription on one of the veranda pallars was shown in 1874 to date the cave to the reign of "the glorious Mangalesa, the favorite of the world." The inscription more precisely dates the cave to 578 A.D., and from that anchor the dates of many other events of the era have been calculated.
