Introduction to Egypt
Although mostly empty, Egypt is among the most crowded countries on earth. So it has been since long before Herodotus called it "the gift of the Nile." The Nile Valley, however, covers only about 10,000 of the country's 400,000 square miles, and of that slice only a small area--about 1,200 square miles--is actually irrigated. Crowding on these lands is intense. Fertile as they may be, they cannot possibly support 70,000,000 people, and so today about half of all Egyptians live in cities, including the most populous city in Africa, Cairo.
