The Victorians loved their memorials, however, and the queen was determined to remember her late husband. Here, crossing the Kensington Gardens and on our way to the Royal Albert Hall, we pass this obelisk to John Hanning Speke. It reads: "In memory of Speke. Victoria Nyanza and the Nile 1864." That was the year he shot himself, presumably accidentally. Two years later, this stone went up. No need for Speke's Christian name; no need to explain the significance of Lake Victoria or the source of the Nile. Those who would appreciate the monument already knew.
