The two tracks separate at the summit, with the old line running through a short tunnel and the newer one running through a 2-mile-long one, but they join again and wind down the hill seen here on the right. The tracks take advantage of side valleys--Lakeview Canyon and Coldstream Valley--and loop into them to ease the grade.
