The view in the opposite direction, with the east gopuram of Virupaksha peeking over a tree. Some accounts suggest that the width of the street was a necessity on non-festival days, too. Duarte Barbosa, who was here in 1516, wrote that the houses of the people were "arranged according to occupations, in long streets with many open places. And the folk here are ever in such numbers that the streets and places cannot contain them." Barbosa admired Vijayanagar. The king, he wrote, allows "such freedom that every man may come and go and live according to his own creed, without suffering any annoyance and without enquiry whether he is a Christian, Jew, Moor, or Heathen. Great equity and justice is observed to all, not only by the rulers, but by the people one to another."
