Notes on the Geography of Great Mirror: Photo 35
Better look twice. Fonterra, the old name of the New Zealand Dairy Cooperative, announced in 2012 that it wanted to leave behind this facade and the 16-floor tower behind it: the world's biggest milk processor and dairy exporter needed more space. The facade had belonged to the Masonic Hotel built here in 1887. That hotel burned in 1901 and was replaced by the Grand Hotel, which operated until 1966 and which preserved the Masonic Hotel's facade. In 1987 the City Council approved construction of the tower behind the Grand Hotel facade, now twice saved. The neighboring facade, of the 1881 Freemasons Hall, was saved too.
