Notes on the Geography of Great Mirror: Photo 39

world pictures Great Mirror

A huge flight of stairs once led up from the left here to the temple mount. We're looking at the only surviving bit of what's called Robinson's Arch, which once supported those stairs over a road below. Built by Herod and about five meters wide, the staircase was destroyed in A.D. 70. And Robinson? That would be Edward (1794-1863), one of many Americans drawn to the Holy Land at a time when you could take a shovel and not provoke a riot.
