world pictures China: The Grand Axis of Imperial Beijing

Just north of the front gate is the so-called inner gate, also rebuilt after the Boxers. (The view here is toward the south, with the front gate visable through the tunnel.) Contemporaneous with this reconstruction, and just to the gate's north and east, the Diplomatic Quarter was established in 1901 for the exclusive use of foreign legations.
