By the 1890s, Manchester's millowners were looking for an alternative export route, one where they would no longer be gouged by shipping companies in Liverpool. They decided to create their own port, 35 miles inland. Here's a bit of the result, the Manchester Ship Canal, which opened in 1894 and was built to the same depth as the Suez Canal so any ship using the one could use the other.
