Notes on the Geography of The United Kingdom: London 4: Albertopolis: Photo 5
Also in the Gardens, this is one of three castings of Physical Energy, by George Frederick Watts. Created in 1902, the figure in Watts' own words was "a symbol of that restless physical impulse to seek the still unachieved in the domain of material things." Another of the castings is at the Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town, and the third is said to survive on the grounds of the national archives in Harare, after being removed from its original position at the High Court building in Lusaka. Is the statue a fair symbol of Britain at its imperial zenith?
