The other extreme: the "red palace," a landmark that began as H.B. Sale's factory on Constitution Hill. Sale's business was the manufacture of die sinkers, but somewhere along the way the building's very visible location gave somebody an idea and so the ornate tower was added as a memorial to Lord Roberts of Kandahar, who was still very much alive in 1896, when the building (and tower) were completed. The building has more recently been partly vacant and partly used by a restaurant.
