Notes on the Geography of The Czech Republic: Prague: Photo 24

world pictures The Czech Republic: Prague

Architects mindful of heritage today follow in a long local tradition. As early as 1901, Jan Koula prescribed "new areas creating a harmonious whole with the old parts of the city." New buildings, he continued, should "be picturesque, and variation should be achieved by the use of pitched roofs, gables, projections, bay windows etc. but under no circumstances should there be the straight, right lines of ledges and roofs." (Rostislav Svacha, The Architecture of New Prague, 1895-1945, 1994, p. 21.)
