Notes on the Geography of France: Paris 3: Modern: Photo 5
Less spectacularly, Paris was transformed more profoundly by Baron Georges-Eugéne Haussmann, Prefect of the Seine from 1853 to 1870. The most visible result of his work--more so, say, than the equally valuable business of improving the water supply and sewers--was the clearance of a medieval street pattern and its replacement with many new streets, including boulevards with highly visible monuments at key intersections. Here, the Rue Royale widens at the Place de la Concorde with its ancient Egyptian obelisk and, beyond, the National Assembly.
