Inside the cave are several lingams, but they're 20th century additions. The cave might in any case have originally been a Buddhist shrine. Visitors have entertained their own private fantasies. Here's Grace Gallatin Thompson Seton, writing in "Poison Arrows: Strange Journeys... and the Lotos Isle of Bali (1938, p. 299): "I burned a sheaf of rice straw before the Elephant God in whose cave lingers horrors of old torturing and decapitations." That girl had an imagination.
