Neither of them had much use, if any, for Islam or Christianity, but they fell hard for Yoruba religion. By then, however, that religion was on the skids. One indication: the margins of the sacred grove in the center of town were being nibbled at by farmers. Ulli Beier would later write of Islam and Christianity that "the so-called 'universal' religions were found more compatible with the basically materialist ways of life that had been adopted from the West."
