Notes on the Geography of Argentina: Avenida de Mayo: Photo 8

world pictures Argentina: Avenida de Mayo

In the space between the Casa Rosada and the old river bank, Juan de Garay gives one of those "This is the Place" gestures. An earlier Spanish settlement had been attacked by Indians and abandoned. Fifty years later, in 1580, Garay, who had recently been governor upstream at Asunción, came back and tried again. The city survived this time, though Garay didn't, not for long: he was ambushed by Indians and killed three years later, about age 55.
