Notes on the Geography of Portugal: Lisbon/Belém: Photo 28![]() ![]() Two miles upstream, a triumphal arch--vertically stretched beyond the classical proportions--was completed in 1873 on the site of the royal palace destroyed in the famous Lisbon quake of 1755. Cautiously, much of the palace site was left as an immense plaza, the Praça do Comércio. The south side of the plaza fronts the river; the other three sides are rimmed by the buildings of a new palace occupied since 1910 by government offices.
