Notes on the Geography of Thailand: Bangkok: Photo 38

world pictures Thailand: Bangkok

This is the main path into the squatter settlement just south of the khlong and east of the palace. (This is the same squatter settlement seen in the northward view from Siam Square station.) Despite efforts at slum clearance, Bangkok had some 1,744 slums in 1992, and they housed about a million people. The largest, with 75,000 people, was downstream, at the port community of Klhong Toei.  City officials later abolished the slums by formally renaming them "crowded communities." Presto!
