The City Palace, rising above Pichola Lake was begun by Uday Singh II in 1569, when he fled here after losing to Akbar the great fortress--still in ruins--at Chittor. Uday, whose name gives the city its name, was the 53rd ruler of the Mewar Dynasty, and Udaipur was its last capital. The Kingdom of Udaipur, along with Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Bundi, one of the four major states of Rajputana, incorporated into Rejasthan in 1956. Like all the princely states of India, royal Udaipur no longer has any political significance, but the ruling family itself is still resident here and treated with deference by natives of the place. (For much more, see Ian Austin's online Mewar Encyclopedia.)
