Notes on the Geography of Peninsular India: Hampi Sacred Center: Photo 6
Pilgrims are interested instead in the Virupaksha Temple, the only active temple on the site. Virupaksha was the family deity of the Sangama dynasty, which ruled in his name and with his protection. The two later dynasties were more ecumenical, adopting Vishnu as well. And Pampa, the goddess who was here first? She was "Sanskritized" by importing Shiva and making her his wife. The sheet metal up ahead covers a temple cart used in a February festival.
