Notes on the Geography of Laos: Houayxay Vicinity 1
A local driver offered a ride down the road.
The road to Louang Prabang is very circuitous and bears in a northeasterly way out of town. Here, a couple of miles from town, it's already unpaved.
Yet here, a few miles further along, there's a house with concrete foundation posts, a motorcycle, and manufactured railings and rooftiles.
Another house, equally suggestive not only of wealth but of a familiarity with the building materials of industrial society, like concrete blocks.
Even a house of wood and woven-leaves has a corrugated roof.
And here, although the house is entirely of traditional materials, a TV antenna imports foreign ideas.
A stroll through a village.
Why on posts? Snake protection?
Why not on posts?
Extraordinary how far television reaches--here received from an antenna on a bamboo pole.
One last glimpse. Why the red tips?
