Notes on the Geography of Austria : Stillupp
Two dams block branches of the Ziller. Water from each runs through a powerhouse and then down to a third reservoir. From there, water can be released to a third powerhouse, but at periods of low demand purchased power is used to pump water back to the two upstream reservoirs. Come dinnertime, the water turns around and runs downhill through the turbines.
The Schlegeis Reservoir looks peaceful enough, but on a summer day you'd best count on sharing the scenery with a thousand people, most of them looking like poster children for cardiac health.
Looking the other way, toward the dam.
The dam itself.
Downstream, another defensive measure against landslides.
