They look over the northwest corner of the Forbidden City and westerly to the New City.
Recommended reading: Wu Liangyong, Rehabilitating the Old City of Beijing: A Project in the Ju'er Hutong Neighborhood (1999). Wu writes (p. 34): "multi-storey buildings have sprung up here and there. I remain to be convinced that this is the destiny of history; rather, it may be simply lack of imagination on the part of planners and designers."
