Notes on the Geography of Uzbekistan: Khiva; Pakhlavan Mahmoud
The Pakhlavan Mahmoud Mausoleum was built between 1810 and 1825 to commemorate a poet-wrestler of that name. He had died many centuries earlier, in 1325, but he was later made the protector of his descendants, who ruled Khiva as the Kungrad Dynasty of the 19th century.

The brilliant dome was retiled after a snowfall in 1993 stripped off the previous cover.
